12/18/2008 12:00:00 AM

The Port of Ridgefield Board of Commissioners has appointed long time Ridgefield resident and business owner Scott Hughes to fill the vacancy left by Roy Randel who passed away last October. The appointment was announced at the regular Port public meeting last evening by the two remaining seated commissioners, Bruce Wiseman and Joy Melroy.

“I’m really honored to have been selected to serve on the Port Board of Commissioners, it’s a great organization doing very important work and I’m going to take my involvement very seriously”, said Hughes. Commissioner Hughes also stated that he is a big supporter of the work that the Port is doing with regard to the Ridgefield waterfront and one of his goals will be to promote a synergy between the City of Ridgefield and the vision of the waterfront that is beginning to take shape through the efforts of the Port. “With current economic conditions it’s important that the focus on job and community development doesn’t loose momentum. I’m sure going to do my best to make that happen and I hope that the citizens of the Port District will get involved and help make it happen as well. I’m also going to do my utmost to honor the legacy left by Roy Randel, and work collaboratively with Bruce Wiseman and Joy Melroy, it won’t be the same team, but it can be a great team.”

Commissioner Hughes moved to Ridgefield from Hazel Del in 1993 and in 1999 purchased Ridgefield True Value Hardware along with the adjacent Ridgefield Liquor Store. He has been active with the Ridgefield Business Association and served 3 years on the Ridgefield Planning Commission including a term as commission chairman. He has also been a long time regular attendee at Port public meetings offering input and feedback as well as volunteering his time and energy to numerous Port events. Commissioner Hughes and his wife Cathy, have two sons who also live in Ridgefield and a daughter at home who is a sophomore at Ridgefield High. He is a University of Portland graduate and also holds an MBA from Washington State University.

Commissioner Hughes will begin his duties immediately and will serve until the general elections in November of 2009 at which time he will be required to run for election to the position.
